A Poem for Daisy
Angeline P. Piñera, RN
I
Countless nights, when my eyes refused to rest.
Touched by a gentle soul, when my heart was a mess.
Questions from one side of the world to another;
A broken barrier, clear sign of getting closer!
Brought smile on my face, found comrade with each other.
Shared secrets and stories, everything felt better.
With a courageous heart, I asked like a friend;
What it meant to say “Just Once Again.”
II
“Just Once Again,” she said; then sealed her lips.
An imperfect friend as I am, I made Daisy upset.
Through my mind, through my words, I asked for forgiveness.
Will you forgive me, one more time? “Just Once Again!”
Daisy has a warm heart, like an Angel I say it is.
Through Heaven’s way; a new door has opened.
A new beginning; a new sight to set in.
Welcomed each other into a new loop of friendship.
III
At times of unending battles with Major Depression;
There was Daisy to hear out my emotions.
At times, when I no longer wish to live;
When I couldn’t even dare to breathe;
I would talk to Daisy and confess, “Let me go!”
Dear friend, I don’t want to live. I’m Sorry!
But I don’t want to die either. I’m Sorry!
And I couldn’t rest yet as I’ve made Daisy a promise.
IV
Daisy, If I see you bloom, will you let me go?
Daisy, once I kept my promise, will you let me go?
Daisy, I saw you bloomed, I touched you.
I held you, I hugged you, I kissed you.
You’re a beautiful flower in a world called paradise.
You’re a lovely flower in the morning sunrise.
You’re a sweet gentle flower, In my loving memory.
In my deep-seated thoughts, forever, eternally.
V
My unpredictable mind left me with impulsive thoughts;
with loneliness, pain, and sorrow hiding in place.
What if I could no longer hang unto life?
What if I could no longer exist and survive?
What if I’m too drained in and out as I fell-ill?
When my heart had lost a hold of strong-will?
Sometimes I question why I bother Daisy.
The diary of my depression; all I can say is sorry.

Whispers of Perseverance: A Mentor’s Perspective
Dr. Regine M. Manzanillo
The initial denial was received. Then someone else. Also, there is another. Every single one of them was a quiet blow, and all that was met with was the hum of unanswered emails and the weight of expectations that were not satisfied.
They did not intend to work in the food industry in the first place. On the contrary, they had managed to dodge it. They are too demanding and too unpredictable. One evening, however, when they were mindlessly browsing through Facebook, they brought themselves to a halt. Something strange, something that had never been seen in their region, was shown on a video. There was a brief spark of interest that turned into an ember of possibility.
They started off. There are no words or motions. Attempting to measure, mix, and test late into the night. Failures were acknowledged with silent nods, and glances were exchanged over batches that were rejected. It turned out that their kitchen turned into a battleground of tiredness and optimism.
After that, something is different. A sigh, a pause, and an epiphany all at once. It was successful. They were having something.
As I watched, they stood in front of the people who made the decisions, their hands firmly grasping their product. There was a wordless pleading that lingered in the air. This time, the response was significantly different. The act of accepting. A nod as well. At long last, a door had opened.
Success did not come rushing in. With reluctance and uncertainty, it crawled. There was a shortage of supplies. The number of sales fluctuated. Frustration was building up unspoken tension in the room. The nights dragged on for a long time, and none of them expressed any doubts. The question "What if this isn't enough?" lingered in the air until it was finally answered.
Then consequently, there is only one order. Then someone else. Also, there is another. Despite the absence of any assurances, they adjusted, adapted, and moved forward. Simply because resiliency is not about achieving loud successes. It is about perseverance in the midst of stillness, about moving forward even when the rest of the world is not looking observing.
The trip that they are on continues to be imperfect; it is chaotic, unpredictable, and full of difficult moments that are quiet. But within that void of sound, they discovered something that was worth clinging to. On top of that, that was the deciding factor.
My role as their advisor allowed me to see more than simply a financial opportunity. I saw people develop, become more resilient, and remain unwavering in their determination to transform challenges into opportunities. And it's possible that I, too, discovered a fresh trust in the power of tenacity while I was traveling beside them.

Ang Pagbagsak ng Demokrasya: Isang Pagsusuri sa Awtoritaryanismo at Pasismo sa Pamumuno ni Duterte
By: Jhezryll Pascua

Droga at krimen, kanyang sinupil,
Paaralan, tren, gusali, bawat punto
Kinabukasan ng bayan, kanyang inasikaso.
Bayang matatag, walang pangamba,
Manggagawa’t magsasaka, kanyang pinakinig,
Taas-sahod at ayuda sa bawat isa,
Pag-unlad na patas, kahit yan ay pandemic
Bagamat maraming tutol at galit,

Lion and Fox: A Philippine Political Allegory
….”the first method is that of men, the second of beasts”.
-Machiavelli
“Change is coming.” This popular mantra captured the hearts of countless Filipinos before the May 2016 national election. Everyone was eagerly anticipating the reforms that would take place in the Philippines. Impressed by his formidable leadership and track record as the Mayor of Davao, Digong was elected as the 16th President of the country. As Machiavelli pointed out in his work “The Prince”, …”and above all a prince must endeavour in every action to obtain fame for being great and excellent.” This image was further realized as Duterte proceeded with the famous Build, Build, Build project, pledging an $180 billion spending spree to modernize and build airports, roads, railways, and ports (Perry, 2021). The scars of Covid-19 virus had also turned the tables for Duterte, as the passage of the Bayanihan Law created a commendable impression among Filipinos, helping the country thrive in the face of the challenges posed by the pandemic. The passage of the Bangsamoro Organic Law and the resolution of the Marawi Crisis impressed the Muslim communities in Mindanao, solidifying Duterte's governance. The increase in salaries for military and uniformed personnel, a 73.76 percent decrease in the country's crime rate over five years, and the enhancement of provisions on Freedom of Information set a relaxing and peaceful tone in the Philippines, making it a more desirable place to live. The youth were also pleased with the passage of the Free Higher Education Program, the Free Wifi for All Project, and the intensified implementation of the 4Ps Program. These are just some of the initiatives under the Duterte administration that resonate with the citizens, as Machiavelli put it, “It is imperative that The Prince exercise all diligence to avoid being despised or hated” (Sahakian, 1965). He is likened to a fox that moves with precision and wisdom. Machiavelli further states, “It is not, therefore, necessary for a prince to have all the above-mentioned qualities (virtuous image) but it is very necessary to seem to have them. It is not necessary to be actually virtuous but only to appear so, for the masses are extremely gullible.” The idea presented here reflects the kind of governance the Duterte administration portrayed, as seen in the works of Machiavelli. This does not conclusively suggest that the positive aspects of the Duterte administration are merely a disguise for his true personality (the fox), but rather posits a contestable presumption that these achievements have garnered significant favor among the masses.
Keeping the promise! Duterte vowed to carry out a fierce anti-drug campaign when he assumed office as the country’s President. An estimated 6,000 deaths were officially reported by the Philippine National Police, but human rights groups contended that the actual number of drug-related killings reached as high as 30,000 (Latoza & Latoza, 2025). The President's campaign against corruption in government led to the dismissal of 200 personnel (Geducos, 2022). He is also likely to utter profane words, claiming he cannot help it; he just cannot stop cursing in public, especially when he gets angry (Kabiling, 2021). These actions project a fearful message to the public, demonstrating both courage and the will to terminate threats if necessary. Machiavelli points out that being a fox is insufficient for a prince; one must have recourse to the lion as well. It is therefore necessary to know how to use both the beast and the man—the lion and the fox. As he was greatly feared in Davao, Duterte attempted to impress the nation with a similar approach.
With this track record, many believe that the Duterte administration will leave an unforgettable mark on the Philippines. Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea stated that President Duterte's legacy "will not only be talked about in the years ahead but will also be felt by generations to come" (Geducos, 2022). However, given the current situation of former President Duterte being tried by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity, it seems that all his cunning achievements have been overshadowed. What is most remembered about him are his actions as a lion. It can be argued that “The Prince” may be effective in manipulating the masses but remains subject to critical scrutiny. Even Machiavelli himself considered “The Prince” to be a hypocritical philosophy.
With the 2028 National Election approaching, we will see if the "Duterte Magic" is still embraced by Filipinos, whether through Vice President Sara Duterte or any representative from the PDP-Laban Party seeking the highest post in the country. Will there be another "Prince" leading the Philippines, or could this become a pivotal moment in the country’s electoral processes?

The Legacy of Duterte: A Nation in Pain
Joven Albert Castillo
Most of all, under Rodrigo Duterte's presidency, the Philippines has been under a period of deep scars-scars that are not easy to fade at all. Violence, fear, and denial of basic human rights were the characteristics that marked the Philippines government under the tenure of Duterte. The "war on drugs," as Duterte's official term for it, became his administration's most defining program. Ironically, it would bring death, not justice. Thousands of Filipinos were killed right in the public streets, many without trial, many without being able to defend against anything. This "war" has already come to mean the elimination of human beings rather than stopping crime; it has put the lives of so many families’ upside down.
Oppositionists to Duterte would say that it felt like terrorism living throughout his regime. Innocents suffer deaths because of the ruthless, inhumane policy. All basic rights of citizens are met with sheer negligence in the Duterte administration. Most of what he said focused on "cleansing" the streets, such as "uprooting" the "undesirables." It almost sounded like one of those things where being poor or marginalized is no longer a life. And what's worse? Not even pretending to provide law-justification-they go street by street, sometimes even in the daylight, with the police acting as executioners. Thousands of deaths later, we still do not have the figure of who was murdered under justice's cover. For some people, it is a necessary evil, but to most people it is an unforgivable violation of all they stand for.
His supporters might say that Duterte requires drastic action against crime, but how much can be called justice by paying the price of thousands of innocent lives? What sort of president permits the slaughter of his people without even a fair trial? Change was supposed to happen under the new regime, such as the peace that came with spilling more blood and increased fear.
For the killers, ugliness was winning rhetoric. He often mocked the dead, treated those who did not agree with him in the most derogatory terms, and used language that was sordidly abusive. His language was harmful, creating an environment where disrespect became normal. He even made jokes about violence towards women, setting a dangerous precedent for the whole country. The very presidency was not only about policy but held a culture of fear and intimidation tenure. He lived off the controversy and division, constantly summoning those who stood against him as enemies of the state.
As Richard Javad Heydarian, a political analyst, pointed out, Duterte's presidency not only weaponized populism but also disrespected the very ideals of democratic governance. Hence, this idea of neglect of due process, checks and balances, and human rights transformed the presidency into an authoritarian regime. Here was not a leader who practiced justice and fairness, but one who wielded the tools of power in muzzling opposition and justifying state-sponsored violence.
Political analyst and Southeast Asia specialist Carl Thayer also registered his concerns over the methods used by Duterte. Thayer said that Duterte's war on drugs was not merely a local affair, for it had received widespread condemnation worldwide from human rights groups and governments alike. Thayer described Duterte as a populist, apparently less than respectful of the rule of law but highly injurious to the international reputation of the Philippines. Under Duterte, the Philippines suffered not only from internal strife, but also became an outcast upon the world stage, as his very many acts were condemned by foreign nations and institutions alike. Duterte Imported Campuses to Assure the Ulterior Motives of His Administration.
Notwithstanding the histrionics that marked the latter days of his presidency, a legacy of healing was not built. A legacy of fear was built instead. Fear of voicing one's opinion, fear of the police, and fear of losing relatives to the absurdity of the drug war. What Duterte said was the promise of change was not the change we desired. We wanted change for a tomorrow where justice and fairness ruled, where the law would be the law. We got instead violence, threats, and a country that seemed to have lost its human face while under Duterte's umbrella.
The pieces remain to be picked as his terms come to an end. His legacy, one of division, one of wounds, and one that gushed deep into the very heart of the nation. The lives lost, the broken families, the mockery of democratic traditions-their common denominator being a man whose penchant was for control over compassion, power over people. The hurt caused by Duterte will not be easy to mend. If the Philippines is to heal, the road ahead will be long.
Nonetheless, there is hope despite the pain. Resilience has always been in the Philippines. Time and again, the Filipino has risen against odds, and this is no different. His legacy acts as a cautionary tale not just to the leaders that will come but to each one of us. Power should never be allowed to become a weapon against the people. We must hold our leaders accountable so that the mistakes of the past are never repeated.
This editorial allows reflection on what Duterte's presidency has cost the Philippines. It is an opportunity to mourn the lost lives, the ruined lives, the lives forever altered by the agony of countless men and women dying every day because of his unthinking decisions. We must not let these atrocities sit in the backdrop but learn from them so that the Philippines will never again be ruled by a leader who holds power above human dignity.

Yakap ng Gunita

Ika-sampu ng disyembre,
Dalawpu’t labing-tatlo nang ika’y lumisan
Lubos na pighati ang nadarama
At puso’y puno ng kalungkutan.
Sa gabing mapanglaw,
Ikaw’y laging nasa balintataw.
Luha’y bumalong, puso’y nagdadalamhati,
Ngunit sa alaala, ikaw’y nananatili.
Sa bawat dasal, sa bawat awit,
Ikaw’y buhay, kailanma’y ‘di mawawaglit.
Nakaraan mo’y ‘di ko malilimutan,
Aking inspirasyon ‘yong kasipagan
Kami’y patuloy sayong magmamahal.
At sa bawat hangin, haplos mong banayad,
Ramdam naming ikaw’y laging nasa tabi’t gabay.
Philippines: Awake or Asleep? A Nation in the Aftermath of FPRRD

The Philippines, known for its lively culture and tenacious citizens, is currently in a transitional phase as it deals with the aftermath of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte's tenure. An enduring question persists: is the country genuinely aware and proactively influencing its future, or is it still entranced by the strong and often divisive stories that emerged during his administration?
Duterte's time in office, characterized by a forceful “war on drugs,” transformed the country's political landscape. His populist charm, built on promises of quick justice and decisive measures, found a receptive audience among citizens frustrated with the government's perceived inaction and rising crime rates. This era saw a dramatic increase in extrajudicial killings, sparking significant concerns about human rights and the integrity of the law.
While some praised the reported decline in crime, others criticized the diminishing of essential freedoms. This period compelled the nation to face difficult realities regarding its justice system and the boundaries of executive authority. The period following Duterte's presidency has shown a country dealing with the repercussions of his policies. The international community, which had been outspoken in its criticism, is now watching as the Philippines tries to navigate a complicated situation. While the “war on drugs” is still ongoing, there has been a shift in language and an emphasis on rehabilitation. Nevertheless, the underlying issues that contribute to the drug crisis persist, and the long-term effects of the violence remain unclear. The matter of accountability for alleged human rights violations looms large, highlighting the difficulties in achieving genuine justice.
In addition, Duterte's foreign policy, which involved a shift towards China and a move away from traditional allies such as the United States, has placed the Philippines in a delicate geopolitical position. The South China Sea continues to be a contentious issue, prompting a reassessment of the nation’s strategic alliances. This phase calls for a realistic evaluation of national interests and a thoughtful approach to international relations.
The question of whether the Philippines is experiencing a state of awareness or slumber is not simply a yes or no issue; it exists on a spectrum that represents the varied experiences and viewpoints of its citizens. There are clear indicators of a societal awakening. Civil society groups, advocates for human rights, and independent news organizations continue to demand accountability from those in power, pushing for transparency and justice. The youth, now more involved in political discussions, are influencing the narrative and striving for a future that reflects their ambitions.
Nonetheless, the lasting impact of Duterte’s populist language and the division it created must not be overlooked. The risks posed by misinformation and the decline in trust towards institutions present substantial hurdles. The nation’s ability to recover from past traumas and create a cohesive path forward will rely on its willingness to engage in open conversations, tackle systemic problems, and reinforce the rule of law.
The Philippines finds itself at a pivotal moment. The experience of Duterte's presidency highlights how delicate democracy can be and underscores the necessity of staying alert. The nation’s future depends on its willingness to reflect on past lessons, uphold democratic values, and ensure that every citizen’s voice is acknowledged. The choice between remaining passive or fully engaging with the challenges and opportunities that await will ultimately shape its future. Although the journey of awakening—addressing past issues and creating a brighter tomorrow—has started, it remains uncertain whether this path will be followed to completion.

Behind the Gavel: The ICC's Role as an Unwitting Pawn in Philippine Politics
By Atty. Zigfred M. Diaz
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has long been a cornerstone of international justice, but its increasing entanglement in global politics has drawn significant scrutiny. Critics argue that the ICC is vulnerable to politicization and manipulation by powerful state actors, raising concerns about its ability to uphold its foundational mission of impartial justice. This critique is particularly relevant in cases where the sovereignty of nations and the efficacy of their judicial systems are at stake. By applying the lens of cultural relativism, a concept from anthropology that emphasizes understanding and respecting the unique cultural and societal contexts of local populations, we can better assess whether the ICC’s interventions align with its stated principles or risk becoming tools for geopolitical agendas.
The ICC’s involvement in the Philippines offers a compelling case study. The court’s decision to investigate former President Rodrigo Duterte’s controversial "war on drugs" has sparked debate about the necessity and motivations behind its intervention. The Philippines possesses a functional judicial system capable of addressing domestic legal issues, yet the Marcos Jr. administration’s eagerness to involve the ICC suggests political maneuvering rather than a genuine need for international justice. (CNN, 2025) By portraying the Philippine judiciary as unwilling or unable to prosecute, the administration has effectively justified ICC involvement without fully considering the local political context. (International Criminal Court, n.d.) This raises questions about whether the ICC is being exploited to serve domestic political agendas, undermining its role as an impartial arbiter of justice.
This case highlights a broader issue: the ICC’s tendency to overlook the complex political, social, and historical dynamics of the nations it intervenes in. Without a thorough understanding of these contexts, the ICC risks becoming entangled in internal power struggles, as seen in the Philippines. Such oversights not only compromise the court’s credibility but also alienate the very communities it seeks to serve.
The ICC’s challenges extend beyond the Philippines. Its recent actions, such as the issuance of arrest warrants against Russian officials in March 2023, have raised concerns about procedural fairness and external influence. Reports of a donor conference aligning contributions with investigations into Russian activities in Ukraine have fueled allegations of corruption and politicization. (Sofinskiy, 2024) These incidents suggest that the ICC’s reliance on funding from powerful states may compromise its neutrality, transforming it into a vehicle for geopolitical interests rather than a guardian of international law.
The ICC’s strained relationship with the Global South further underscores its credibility crisis. In Africa, for instance, the court’s focus on prosecuting African leaders has been widely criticized as biased and counterproductive to national reconciliation efforts, leading to the withdrawal of several countries form the ICC. (BBC News, 2017) (Sofinskiy, 2024) Similarly, the ICC’s decision to investigate Duterte-era crimes after the Philippines’ withdrawal from the court has been viewed as a breach of sovereignty and an overreach of its mandate. These actions have deepened perceptions of the ICC as an instrument of Western influence, further eroding its legitimacy.
The ICC’s failure to account for local political, socio-economic, cultural, and historical contexts has significantly diminished its effectiveness. Its perceived partiality and susceptibility to external influence have alienated many within the international community. With a significant portion of UN member states, including major powers, refusing to participate in the ICC (Nomad Capitalist, 2024), the court’s claim to represent the global community is increasingly tenuous.
To restore its credibility, the ICC must undertake urgent reforms. These should include enhancing transparency, establishing safeguards against external influences, and prioritizing a rigorous consideration of local contexts in its interventions. By doing so, the ICC can ensure that its actions support rather than undermine national institutions, avoiding entanglement in internal conflicts and geopolitical schemes. Only through such reforms can the ICC fulfill its mission of delivering impartial and universally respected justice.

Main Goals in Transition to Political Turmoil
Insera Alongan Mantawil
How can we attain the Sustainable Development Goals if the government itself is the problem?
The ongoing political war is one of the most pressing issues in our country, along with the struggles faced by our allied nations.
But that’s exactly the point—we Filipinos need to stop being fanatics when it comes to political opinions. Allowing others to express their views is a fundamental right, and instead of attacking one another, we should focus on contributing to the country's progress. Our words and opinions, whether positive or negative, have an impact on others.
What truly matters is accountability. I understand your grief, worries, and frustrations—they are valid. But let’s not forget: we are the ones who shape the society we often blame. The societal standards we criticize today are the very ones we built in the past. That is why we must focus on the present—and the most immediate step we can take is to choose our leaders wisely in the upcoming election. We must prioritize quality over quantity when voting because our choices today will shape our future, just as our past decisions have led us to where we are now.
At the end of the day, our opinions are valuable, but they must be accompanied by accountability and a genuine desire for unity. Wake up, kababayan—blaming political parties won’t solve our problems. Instead, we must take this as a wake-up call to be extra careful and responsible in making our next decision.

On Saying Never Again to the Drug War
Jenardson A. Cabilao
A common thread in the current political milleu is the concept of never-againism. To atone for the atrocities commited by a regime we must make every effort to avoid letting this happen again through avoiding even coming close to the set of circumstances that caused the atrocities in the first place. In the Philippines this sense of Never Again has become a silent part of its politics since 1986 that until Duterte's appearance in the fray no leader would dare enact anything that looked like punishment. Of the many factors that lead us to the election of 2016, a sense of nothing being done for crimes closer to home was felt, and that change was needed.
Thus came one of the more polarizing regimes in the country.
I will focus on the fallout that might happen if we are to say never again to the War on Drugs in reparation for the sin of extrajudicial killings. Whatever happens to the man matters little, his image has already been set for us by activists etc. as a pariah who lusted for blood. What we must do then a the fallout of this event is never to let this happen again by not electing anyone who says will deal with criminals.
A common debate during these times is whether or not the victim is innocent, with one side insisting everyone who died is innocent while the other arguing that the action was justifiable. This comes from the inherent problem of ordering such deaths, the death of an innocent is at most negligent while a criminal killed in this manner is arguably an unjust punishment, with lack of due process the usual rallying cry. Either way this leads to hailing dying through EJK as a sort of martyrdom, an exoneration by dying in the hands of an uncaring regime that hunts people for sport.
So after a constant barrage of the evils of Martial Law, the Filipinos will be chastised for even thinking of electing someone who has caused all this blood to spill, and will be subjected to even more haranguing about the need to avoid this situation ever again for justice to return. Never Again is in full swing once more. Constant reminders of human rights will ring in the air, criminal reforms will go in the direction of assuming every criminal was forced to act that way and so are the real victims of the system, after all, we have been through two administrations that were so power-hungry they never saw these people as merely reacting to the injustices they wrought unto them. This is not even mentioning a push for decriminalization or even legalization of drugs as reparation for shamefully calling people drug addicts.
Yet the people will choose for their interests, not merely for some abstract notion of democracy. What use is a democracy if one cannot vote for his sake?
Never-againism is inherently unsatisfiable, as it believes only ignorance caused the regimes that required them. That it forces not only choices but actions is a great irony; to save democracy we must forget about it.
Never again? More like never enough.

A Teacher’s Political Neutrality in Society: Upholding Ethics and Professionalism
Author: Jeddah Quiño-Justol, PhD, CRS
In today’s diverse and dynamic society, political discussions are an inevitable part of everyday conversations. Social media, news platforms, and community interactions frequently highlight differing political perspectives. Teachers, as teachers and role models, hold a distinct responsibility in navigating these discussions with professionalism and fairness. Their role is not to impose beliefs but to create an environment where students can explore ideas critically, form their own informed opinions, and engage in constructive dialogue. Political neutrality does not mean avoiding political discussions; rather, it ensures that teachers remain facilitators of balanced discourse without influencing students toward any particular ideology.
Teachers influence how students understand the world. Their words, actions, and even unintended cues can shape how young minds process information. Political neutrality allows teachers to cultivate critical thinking by presenting multiple perspectives rather than endorsing personal viewpoints. In a classroom filled with students from different backgrounds, neutrality fosters an inclusive and respectful learning environment. A politically neutral stance reassures students that their views are valued, helping them engage with issues from various angles. Moreover, upholding professional ethics is paramount. The Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers clearly states that teachers must not use their position to promote personal, political, or religious beliefs. This ensures that teachers focus on education rather than persuasion, maintaining their credibility and trustworthiness among students and the broader community.
Political Neutrality in the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers
The Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers (adopted under the Board for Professional Teachers Resolution No. 435, Series of 1997) provides clear guidelines for ensuring that teachers uphold impartiality in political discussions.
According to Article II, Section 2, a teacher’s primary responsibility is to safeguard the welfare of students. This includes maintaining an objective approach in discussions, allowing students to form their own perspectives without undue influence. Teachers should facilitate conversations that encourage analysis rather than persuasion.
In Article III, Section 4, the Code explicitly states that teachers must not use their authority to promote personal political, religious, or ideological beliefs. Schools should serve as spaces where students develop independent thought, and teachers should guide discussions with balance and professionalism, acknowledging diverse viewpoints without favoring any particular stance.
Article VIII, Section 1 reinforces the importance of teachers refraining from partisan political activities within school premises. Engaging in campaign activities, displaying political materials, or making politically charged statements can undermine a teacher’s role as an impartial teacher. Teachers are free to engage in political activities in their personal capacity but must ensure that their professional responsibilities remain separate from personal beliefs.
Under Article XII, Section 3, teachers are expected to model democratic values and responsible citizenship. Rather than steering students toward specific political conclusions, they should provide them with the tools to assess political matters critically and independently. The goal is to help students develop a rational, informed perspective without external influence.
These provisions emphasize that maintaining political neutrality is integral to a teacher’s ethical responsibility. By adhering to these guidelines, teachers create a respectful and open learning environment where students are encouraged to think independently, analyze multiple viewpoints, and engage in meaningful discussions free from bias.
However, maintaining neutrality can be complex, particularly when political issues overlap with education. External pressures from institutions, government agencies, or the broader community may create expectations for teachers to align with particular viewpoints. Teachers, like any individuals, hold personal beliefs, and setting these aside in professional settings can be challenging, particularly when discussing sensitive issues. The influence of social media further blurs the line between personal and professional expressions, as a teacher’s public statements may be scrutinized and interpreted as partisan. Additionally, parents and communities may have expectations regarding a teacher’s political stance, which can complicate efforts to remain neutral.
Despite these challenges, teachers can take intentional steps to uphold political neutrality while fostering meaningful discussions. Rather than expressing personal viewpoints, teachers can facilitate discussions that present multiple perspectives, allowing students to critically analyze issues. Teaching should be based on credible, factual sources rather than opinions, ensuring that students develop analytical skills without external influence. Creating a classroom culture that encourages respectful, open dialogue reassures students that all viewpoints are welcome. Teachers should also engage in self-reflection, assessing whether their interactions remain unbiased and balanced. Encouraging civic engagement is another important approach—students should be inspired to participate in democratic processes, but without pressure to adopt specific political views. Separating personal beliefs from professional responsibilities, particularly on social media, further reinforces a teacher’s impartiality.
Beyond neutrality, teachers must also be mindful of the information they consume and share. Teachers should avoid giving opinions on topics they are not well-versed in, particularly in politics, where misinformation can easily spread. Critical evaluation of sources is essential, as not all online content is reliable. Social media, while a powerful tool for communication, often circulates misleading or unverified claims. Instead of forming conclusions based on viral content, teachers should encourage the use of reputable sources, research, and historical context to ensure discussions are fact-based and rational. Balancing different perspectives and fostering an analytical mindset among students contributes to an informed, objective learning environment.
The Balance Between Engagement and Neutrality
The responsibility of a teacher extends beyond delivering academic content; it involves guiding students to become informed, responsible, and open-minded individuals. Political neutrality is not about disengagement or indifference—it is about fostering a space where students can explore different viewpoints without external bias. By maintaining neutrality, teachers empower students to think critically, respect differing opinions, and develop the skills needed to navigate complex social issues independently.
Following the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers reinforces a teacher’s commitment to integrity, fairness, and professionalism. Upholding neutrality does not mean avoiding important discussions but rather facilitating them in a way that prioritizes learning over persuasion. In a society where political divisions can create tension, the role of an impartial teacher becomes even more valuable in fostering unity, constructive dialogue, and intellectual independence. By ensuring that classrooms remain spaces for balanced discourse, teachers contribute to an informed and democratic society where students are encouraged to engage responsibly and thoughtfully with the world around them.

Justice for All or Justice for One?
By Justine L. Silva, LPT
The Philippine Constitution guarantees every citizen fundamental rights, including due process, equal protection, and a fair trial. Yet, the recent public sentiment favoring the abduction of our former president raises a crucial question: Are we truly pursuing justice, or are we merely fueling a one-sided narrative?
Holding the highest position in the land demands courage and resilience—especially when enacting reforms that challenge the status quo. Leadership is never about pleasing everyone; rather, it is about prioritizing the greater good of the nation. The former president, despite his controversial beliefs, speech, and actions, displayed genuine care and compassion for the ordinary Filipino. He championed the marginalized—those who could not afford proper healthcare, education, or even the security of a gated community. His policies sought to protect citizens from the dangers of crime, drugs, and violence, ensuring that those who lived in fear could walk the streets safely.
However, justice is a double-edged sword. While many laud the former president for his relentless war on drugs, others mourn the casualties—both innocent lives lost to corrupt law enforcers and the police officers who became victims of drug-related violence. It is tragic to see how a war meant to restore order resulted in even more pain and division. But was this the fault of a single man, or of a deeply flawed system that has long enabled corruption and impunity?
Filipinos are a nation divided, always quick to scrutinize those in power—whether they do good or bad. This reflects our historical struggle: we are no longer conquered by foreign invaders, but by our own ideological conflicts. Until we learn to set aside political biases and seek truth with objectivity, we will remain a people fractured by differing allegiances rather than united by a common vision.
Now, we must ask ourselves: Is this the justice we truly seek? Does what is happening today make us proud as Filipinos? Are we standing for justice for all, or merely justice for one, influenced by political motives?
May God save the Philippines.

Isang bayang nagising, isang diwang muling umalpas at lumakas.

The Thin Line Between Justice and Tyranny
The presidency of Rodrigo Roa Duterte has been a polarizing chapter in Philippine history, marked by a blend of populism, violence, and a controversial approach to governance. As I reflect on his tenure, my sentiments oscillate between concern for human rights and an understanding of his appeal to the masses. Duterte's rise can be attributed to various factors, including widespread dissatisfaction with previous administrations and the allure of his "tough on crime" stance. However, while he garnered significant approval ratings initially, this popularity came at a grave cost to democratic institutions and the rule of law.
Duterte’s approach to governance has often been characterized as "penal populism," where punitive measures are favored over rehabilitative policies. His infamous war on drugs is emblematic of this philosophy. While aimed at curbing drug-related crime—a pressing issue in many communities this campaign has led to thousands of extrajudicial killings and widespread human rights violations. The lack of due process in these operations has raised alarm among local and international human rights organizations, as well as legal experts who argue that such actions undermine constitutional protections and erode trust in law enforcement institutions.
Beyond his war on drugs, Duterte's presidency saw an erosion of democratic norms. His administration openly attacked the press, weakened judicial independence, and silenced critics through legal maneuvers and intimidation tactics. The shutdown of ABS-CBN, one of the country’s largest media networks, was a blatant attack on press freedom. Meanwhile, the imprisonment of opposition figures, including Senator Leila de Lima, further reinforced concerns about the administration's disregard for democratic checks and balances.
Despite these concerns, it would be simplistic to dismiss Duterte's appeal to the masses. His presidency resonated deeply with Filipinos who felt neglected by traditional political elites. His rhetoric of strong leadership and swift justice provided a sense of security for those who had long suffered from crime and corruption. This explains why, despite the controversies surrounding his governance, he maintained high approval ratings throughout his term.
However, history is now taking a closer look at Duterte's legacy, particularly as he faces legal challenges post-presidency. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has reopened its investigation into the extrajudicial killings associated with the drug war. This development underscores the gravity of the alleged human rights violations committed under his watch and raises the question of accountability. His allies argue that his actions were justified by the need to restore order, while his critics maintain that no leader should be above the law.
The current political landscape further complicates Duterte's post-presidency. The alliance between the Duterte and Marcos families initially suggested a continuity of power, but recent tensions indicate a potential rift that could impact his legal and political standing. The question now is whether institutions in the Philippines will uphold justice and ensure accountability, or whether political maneuvering will allow him to evade legal consequences.
As a Filipino, my perspective on Duterte's presidency remains conflicted. While I acknowledge his ability to connect with the frustrations of ordinary citizens, I cannot ignore the erosion of democratic institutions and the human rights abuses that occurred under his watch. Leadership should not be measured by sheer popularity or aggressive policies alone but by the long-term impact on governance, justice, and national unity.
Duterte's tenure serves as a critical lesson for the Philippines. It highlights the dangers of unchecked power, the fragility of democratic institutions, and the enduring appeal of strongman politics. As the country moves forward, it is imperative to reflect on this period with a commitment to truth, justice, and democratic resilience. Only through such reflection can we ensure that the mistakes of the past do not dictate the course of our future.

The Arrest of former President Duterte and Its Political Repercussions
(Writer: Novy H. Facun)
The recent arrest of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has sent shockwaves through the nation's political landscape, marking a crucial moment in the country's history. As a leader known for his uncompromising stance on crime and governance, Duterte's detainment raises questions about the state of democracy, political dynasties, and the rule of law in the Philippines. This essay explores the implications of Duterte’s arrest, the power struggle between political factions, and its broader consequences for the future of Philippine politics.
The Arrest and Its Immediate Impact
On March 9, 2025, former President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested on charges that remain a subject of public debate. While some sources cite human rights violations and corruption as the reasons, others view the arrest as a politically motivated move aimed at neutralizing a major political figure. The event has provoked mixed reactions, with Duterte’s supporters staging protests and his critics welcoming the development as long-overdue justice.
Duterte's presidency, which began in 2016, was characterized by his aggressive war on drugs, a policy that led to thousands of extrajudicial killings. His administration was also marked by controversial alliances and policies that challenged traditional political elites. Given his influence and enduring support base, the arrest is unlikely to go uncontested, with potential legal battles and public demonstrations expected in the coming months.
Dynastic Politics in the Philippines
The Philippines has long been governed by political dynasties, and Duterte’s rise to power disrupted the traditional elite structure. While his initial victory was seen as a break from establishment politics, his rule soon mirrored the very dynastic system he once opposed. His daughter, Sara Duterte, currently serves as vice president and was widely considered a frontrunner for the presidency in future elections.
The arrest of Duterte has intensified the rivalry between his family and the Marcos dynasty, led by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. While the two camps were once allies, their relations soured over time due to competing political ambitions and ideological differences. Duterte’s detainment could be an opportunity for the Marcos family to consolidate power, potentially weakening the Dutertes’ influence in national politics.
Public Reaction and Potential Unrest
Duterte's arrest has polarized public opinion. His supporters see him as a leader who prioritized law and order, arguing that his detention is an unjust political maneuver. Many of his loyalists, particularly in Mindanao, have expressed outrage, holding rallies and calling for his release. On the other hand, his critics believe that the arrest is a necessary step toward accountability for his administration’s human rights abuses.
The situation presents a dilemma for the Marcos administration, which must balance political stability with managing public dissent. If protests escalate into civil unrest, it could challenge the government’s ability to maintain control and enforce the rule of law.
The Future of the Duterte Camp
With Duterte in custody, the future of his political movement remains uncertain. Vice President Sara Duterte now faces a critical decision: to either distance herself from her father in a bid to safeguard her political career or take up the mantle of leadership and challenge the Marcos administration. Her response to this crisis will be pivotal in determining whether the Duterte brand remains a powerful force in Philippine politics.
Other key allies of Duterte must also decide their next moves. Some may attempt to negotiate political deals to protect themselves, while others may seek to rally public support in an effort to maintain the Duterte faction’s influence. The political climate remains highly volatile, with shifting alliances likely in the near future.
International Reactions and Implications
The arrest has not gone unnoticed by the international community. Human rights organizations have applauded the move, seeing it as a victory for justice and a potential step toward accountability for Duterte’s controversial policies. The International Criminal Court (ICC), which has been investigating Duterte’s war on drugs, may see this as an opportunity to further legal proceedings against him.
However, some global leaders and foreign investors are wary of the potential for political instability. The Philippines is a crucial player in Southeast Asia, and any internal turmoil could impact the region’s security and economic environment. The Marcos administration must carefully navigate these diplomatic concerns while addressing domestic unrest.
Conclusion: A Defining Moment for Philippine Politics
The arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte represents a watershed moment in the Philippines’ political evolution. It has reignited debates on justice, governance, and dynastic politics, while also reshaping the power dynamics between the Duterte and Marcos factions. Whether this event leads to greater political consolidation or sparks a new wave of opposition remains to be seen.
What is clear, however, is that the nation stands at a critical juncture. The handling of Duterte’s arrest, the response of his supporters, and the actions of the Marcos administration will determine the course of Philippine politics in the years to come. The world watches as the country navigates one of its most defining political crises in recent history.

The Eagle of the South
JR G. Requita
Upon the cliffs where tempests rise,
Beneath Mindanao’s broadening skies,
A mighty eagle spreads its wings,
A sovereign force, a storm that sings.
Born of lands both fierce and free,
Where jungle thrones meet brackish sea,
His talons carve a daunting path,
A guardian’s will, a leader’s wrath.
Through valleys deep and mountains tall,
His voice resounds like a thunder’s call,
A hunter’s gaze, both sharp and wise,
A tempest brewing in his eyes.
The fields remember, rivers tell,
The days he soared, the times he fell,
Yet through the fire and pouring rain,
He stood, unbowed, through loss and gain.
Not all may praise the path he flew,
The winds he bent, the storms he drew,
Yet none deny, in dusk or dawn,
The eagle’s mark shall linger on.

Duterte vs Marcos at Duterte vs Robredo:

A Battle Worth Fighting for

One man stood against them all
They who claim to be keepers of justice
But when money presents itself
They shed their skin and steal in secret

Words against words, the law against life
He challenged the impostors who live to spit lies
Put the law on his hands, saving innocent lives
But condemned by those he saved with might
III
And now as he was carried before the magistrates
The people he served protested in grief
They cannot be bought nor manipulated
When the one serving is ruled by greed
IV
When a nation fall, and our principles are tested
United we stand, we stand United
When the call for justice is tainted with politics
Then this battle is worthy of success

THE DIVIDED CYNICISM OF A NATION
From every point of view, a country should have a good leader. The Philippines seems to be trapped in a philosophy of black and white, where perspectives are split and progress remains elusive. The influence of social media and the spread of information have deepened divisions, often prioritizing personal beliefs over the pursuit of a competent, just, and rightful government.
Knowledge holds the power to shape our minds, yet as we explore the notion of truth, cynicism prevails. Instead of Nurturing unity & understanding, the true progress will only be achieved when we move beyond the noise of division and strive for genuine leadership that values integrity and accountability.
The search for truth becomes clouded by cynicism. This widespread negativity not only affects political discourse but also takes a toll on mental health. The constant barrage of conflicting narratives leaves people feeling helpless, disillusioned, and anxious.
Moving forward requires not only addressing these divisions but also promoting mental well-being by encouraging open dialogue, empathy, and a genuine pursuit of truth.

Lost in a World of Noise, Found in a Purpose
By Dr. Abdulhamid Mauyag Gunda, RN
There was a time when truth felt absolute, when facts carried weight, and when knowledge distinguished the wise from the ignorant. Yet now, I find myself drowning in a world where reality no longer feels like solid ground, but a shifting tide—manipulated by those who speak the loudest rather than those who think the deepest.
As I scroll through my feed, I am bombarded by headlines that scream urgency but murmur deception. A well-researched warning from a doctor about a global crisis shares the same platform as an influencer’s baseless rant. A historian’s carefully studied insight is drowned by a viral conspiracy theory. Suddenly, knowledge is no longer earned; it is performed, adorned in confidence rather than grounded in credibility.
I wrestle with the dilemma of whether to speak or remain silent. If I challenge falsehoods, I am labeled an enemy—blind, biased, or brainwashed. But if I retreat, I allow the wave of misinformation to swell unchecked, eroding the very foundations of reason. The lines between the educated and the uneducated have blurred, not because knowledge has been shared, but because ignorance has been glorified.
Though I sometimes feel as if I am losing my grip in this sea of noise and polarized voices, my faith-based moral compass and my Ph.D. in social work have become beacons of strength and hope. The light of belief has guided me to recognize my professional accountability. The knowledge, skills, and values inherent in the social work profession have carved a path out of the chaos. They have led me to the realm of research—a place where facts remain sacred and critical thinking is the guiding principle.
The historic arrest of Former President Duterte has opened my eyes to a larger phenomenon—the Crisis in Education. This issue transcends misinformation; it goes to the very core of how we teach, learn, and think. I find myself asking: Which areas of education have we neglected? How have we misunderstood and misused social media? And, most importantly, how can we address these challenges?
These are no longer abstract, academic questions; they are urgent calls for reflection, action, and change. As I step out of the noise and into the clarity of research, I realize that perhaps I was never truly lost—only searching for the right way to be heard.

UNYIELDING WILL: A NATION STANDS WITH DUTERTE
Roemejun S. Aguilar
His leadership lingers in the hearts of his people.
A warrior's stance, and in it, a nation is gained.
Through the tempest of doubters and deep trials,
his promise of service and a kept word remains.
Bold and strong, Rodrigo Duterte, a leader to set his country right.
Crime and fear he sought to put under control
for the sake of the people he was duty-bound to protect.
Now, the world sits in judgment,
as a foreign court weighs in on his fate.
Yet as a sovereign land,
Can we be made to bend to some authorities who do not understand?
The streets were made safe and the fear gone,
as if a different, brighter dawn arose.
Yet some cry out that justice shall be had,
yet for whom and whose case?
The West may point and the critics may jeer,
yet the voice of the Filipino remains unyielding.
No chains, no court, and no foreign decree can rewrite the will of the free.
Let them call out and protest all they want,
yet the name of Duterte will forever linger.
He is not a villain nor a shame but a leader—a steadfast flame.

Thy Kingdom Come

Recent events have ignited a firestorm of public opinion, revealing the diverse perspectives within our society. From legal whizzes dissecting the details of the situation, to ethicists debating the moral imperative of bringing our former leader home, the discourse is multifaceted. Some advocate for a humanitarian approach, mirroring past decisions regarding convicted leaders, while others express fervent emotions and threaten street protests. Some view this as a betrayal of friendship, fueled by political interests, power, greed, and money. This loudness of voices underscores the vibrant dynamics of our humanity and our cherished freedom of expression. Though we share a collective national sentiment, each Filipino possesses a unique interpretation of these events. Like the tower of Babel, we see a confusion of voices, but unlike that story, we seek unity and understanding.
Undoubtedly, a lapse has occurred. Whether it stems from an individual, a group, a flawed process, or a systemic failure, something has disrupted our collective sense of equilibrium. This disturbance, felt deeply within our hearts, has triggered a national wave of reflection and reaction. We yearn for peace, order, and righteousness – values inherently instilled within us, like the law written on our hearts (Romans 2:15). As a social worker, I witness firsthand the ripple effects of such events on our most vulnerable sectors of society. The uncertainty and division worsen existing inequalities, creating heightened anxiety and instability. We must acknowledge the trauma inflicted on communities and prioritize restorative justice, seeking pathways to healing and reconciliation.
Observing local events and the nation's growing political divide, I reflect that this is a time when we deeply crave the Kingdom God promised. This longing speaks to the inherent human need for a just and stable society, a need often unmet by flawed earthly systems. We yearn for a government truly faithful to its citizens, a ruler who is perfect and infallible, subjects consistently loyal to their leader, and laws and orders that are wholly righteous. This reflects the biblical promise of a Kingdom characterized by perfect righteousness (Romans 14:17), where justice and peace reign, and where we are called to be agents of that kingdom here on earth, letting our light shine before others (Matthew 5:16).
These profound desires resonate with the promise of God’s Kingdom. A time when, by His sovereign will, Heaven will descend upon Earth. A perfect government, governed not only by the rule of law, but also by grace, mercy, and righteousness. A new heaven and a new earth, where there will be no more pain or suffering (Revelation 21:1-4).
As Jesus prayed on the Mount, 'Thy Kingdom come,' we echo that plea, hoping for an end to our suffering and the dawn of everlasting life. For we know that in God's time, He will make all things new (Revelation 21:5).
God, Thy Kingdom come!

Editorial: The Duterte Legacy—A Nation Divided, A Democracy Weakened
By Nheño Carlo Jude Ytem
Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s presidency was a six-year saga of iron-fisted rule, fear-mongering, and democratic backsliding. As a Kakampink, I cannot ignore the damage he inflicted on our institutions, our international reputation, and most importantly, the lives of thousands of Filipinos.
Duterte’s war on drugs, hailed by his supporters as a decisive action against criminality, was in reality a bloodbath that disregarded due process and human rights. Thousands of Filipinos—many from poor communities—fell victim to extrajudicial killings, their deaths justified by a government that saw them as collateral damage rather than as citizens deserving of justice and rehabilitation. Yet, despite the outcry from human rights organizations, Duterte and his administration doubled down on their ruthless approach, vilifying critics and silencing dissent.
The erosion of democratic values under Duterte was equally alarming. He repeatedly disrespected the Constitution, attacked independent media, and empowered political dynasties. Institutions meant to serve as checks and balances were either co-opted or rendered ineffective, creating an environment where abuse of power thrived. The closure of ABS-CBN was a blatant attack on press freedom, a move designed to silence voices that dared challenge his administration.
Beyond our borders, Duterte's pivot to China compromised our territorial integrity. His defeatist stance on the West Philippine Sea emboldened foreign incursions, sacrificing our sovereignty for vague promises of economic benefits that never fully materialized. While he mocked our long-time allies and disregarded the 2016 arbitral ruling, China continued to encroach upon our waters, harassing Filipino fishermen and militarizing the region.
As a proud Kakampink, I believe in governance rooted in transparency, justice, and genuine concern for the Filipino people. The 2022 elections reignited hope for many of us who dream of a nation that values democracy over tyranny, unity over division, and truth over propaganda. While Duterte’s tenure may have ended, the fight against his lingering influence—through his political allies and entrenched systems—continues.
Our history will judge Duterte, but we, the people, must ensure that it judges him correctly—not as the strongman who saved the country, but as the leader who weakened its democracy. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to remember, resist, and rebuild.

Safer streets cleansed with blood
written by Joe Vincent M. Fernandez, CMHA
Streets are now safer thanks to Duterte — but, at what expense?
Six years of presidency framed by pervasive violence pierced an extensive laceration that even imprisonment cannot heal overnight. But for now, under the regime of renewed hope, the streets will be truly safer as they will not be drenched by blood or bullets anymore, but with justice that lingers ahead.
The arrest of former Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte following the arrest warrant issued by the Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on February 10, 2025, for the charges of crimes against humanity during his protracted years in politics, shocked the country for different reasons. Known for his infamous labels and political tactics, the former Davao City mayor was surrendered by the Philippine authorities to the ICC on March 12 to face his trials in the international court for his alleged crimes, including brutal calls on the war on drugs, torture, and rape, trailing from his alleged role as the head of the Davao Death Squad (DDS), which transcended from local dispatches to national headlines.
Duterte, also a former local prosecutor and congressman, was seen as a mighty father figure in his bailiwick due to his strong persona as a politician rooted in his trademark threats to opponents and criminals, unjust disquisition, and political movement, notably when he ran for and won the highest seat in the country in 2016. During this timeline, his administration compiled an outstanding 12,000 war on drugs-related deaths, with almost 3,000 fatalities being attributed to the Philippine National Police (PNP), according to Human Rights Watch report. However, a minimal police turnover was reported for having accountability for these deaths beyond service, to what is outrightly referred to as extrajudicial killings. Meanwhile, neither Duterte nor his administration was apologetic for these fatal figures, framing a gruesome recall for his blood-soaked presidency.
In addition, he was also tagged responsible for the deaths of several activists, journalists, and innocent individuals linked to his drug raid or ‘Tokhang’ operations. On a similar note, there was no concrete court evidence defining these connections, which puts a large gray area in his drastic resolve. Further, during his term, red-tagging was relatively prevalent, particularly among news organizations, local personalities, students, and members of the media, who deemed to speak up about his term’s irregularities and shortcomings. While his presidential trail leads to some progressive outputs, his administration significantly fail to uphold a clean government, for which he promised in his campaign sorties. His six-year run was ended however by the investigation prompted by ICC on these alleged crimes, which continued despite Duterte’s active refutations and official departure from the organization in 2019.
Now, this drama caused a variegated turmoil following the number of convictions on the ‘surprise’ arrest warrant verbalized by his supporters dubbed as “DDS”, terming the arrest as “having no mercy and empathy” for the aging Duterte. Meanwhile, his critics and the bereaved families of drug war victims reveled his apprehension on his criminal liabilities because finally, after years of mourning for justice, hope is still shedding in the ongoing court proceedings in the Netherlands, hoping to turn the tables from Duterte’s dark legacy.
Meanwhile, the trial, now trailing in The Hague via synchronous mediums, spiced up the conversations further as the capture caught Filipinos and the global news off-guard as the former head of state was seized during the term of a former ally in President Ferdinand “Bong Bong” Marcos Jr., whom DDS and some locals taught of being the pioneer of his capture. Under the realm of an indefinite political clash between the two high-profile family dynasties in the country, this might just be the case as the current administration’s subjective interests would most likely stir the plot of FPRRD’s fate in the international chambers. However, Marcos was quick to dissolve any allegation as he made clear that Interpol requested to arrest Duterte in the country, for which he is obliged to grant and fulfill to reserve the country’s future alliances and international commitments.
At the verge of moving forward to witness how Duterte’s fate in the international court will unfold, his critics and those who belong to the families of drug war victims remain watchful on the circulations of the court proceedings, particularly now that his supporters and political confidants persist to urge the pro-Duterte faction to scrap the persecutions against their greater father. While this stands firm, Filipinos must also remain ahead at the helm of reviewing the bigger picture beyond headlines and mere thumbnails, because now more than ever, being informed about the social issue is not enough, the country has to be cultured with the correct grip to tell whether which street is the rightfully safer path to tread on.
Duterte’s arrest was just one step toward overdue justice. Achieving this cannot be manufactured overnight; thus, the nation, despite being divided by contradicting perspectives, has the responsibility to uphold its conventions over mere favorites. To clear things straight, his administration did not make any street safer than what it was before, as blood dampened most roads leading to an elusive justice, but now, with ICC’s resolute pursuit, it can transpire — one hearing at a time.
